Crude steel production in Arab countries reached 23.8 million tons in the January-July 2024 period, up 4.9 percent compared to the same period last year, according to data obtained by SteelRadar from the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
In July, this figure stood at 3.4 million tons, up 2.7 percent year-on-year. This growth was seen as a reflection of the region's expanding industrial capabilities and economic resilience.
Looking at the crude steel production figures of the countries, Saudi Arabia's crude steel production increased by 3.1% in July compared to the same month of the previous year. This figure stood out with a total production of 5,916 thousand tons in the January-July period, indicating an increase of 3.9%.
The United Arab Emirates also showed an impressive 26.7% increase in the seven-month period, reaching 2,080 thousand tons, but suffered a significant drop of 20.6% in July.
Oman produced 1,788 thousand tons with a modest increase of 0.3%, while it posted a notable increase of 38.5% in July. Bahrain kept its production level unchanged, producing a steady 100 thousand tons.
Qatar and Kuwait also contributed to the positive trend. Qatar's production increased by 3.8% in January-July, reaching 695 thousand tons, despite a small decline of 1.2% in July. Kuwait, on the other hand, increased its production by 2.4% to 85 thousand tons in July and by 2.2% yoy to 598 thousand tons in January-July.
In North Africa, Egypt posted a significant increase of 9.7% to 6,183 thousand tons in January-July 2024.
