At the demand of domestic steel producers CSN and Tekno Industry and Trade, the Brazilian Foreign Trade Department (SECEX) has opened an anti-dumping investigation into pre-painted steel products from China and India. The investigation is evaluating allegations of underpricing and the demand for tariffs by domestic producers. Steel imports from China rose from 1.6 USD billion in 2014 to 2.7 USD billion last year. In the first eight months of this year, Brazil imported 148,000 tons of steel from China and 5,000 tons from India. This step is considered as a measure to protect the local steel industry.
Anti-dumping tariffs to be imposed as a result of the investigation may affect global steel prices and supply.
