Anglo American is laying off a large number of workers

Anglo American is reportedly implementing job cuts at its corporate headquarters across multiple countries. This decision comes in the wake of reports indicating that Kumba Iron Ore, its South African subsidiary, is planning significant layoffs at its own headquarters. The global mining giant initiated a restructuring process in May, with expectations of potential staff reductions at corporate offices worldwide.

The National Union of Mineworkers has disclosed that Anglo's Kumba Iron Ore intends to eliminate 183 positions, primarily concentrated at its head office. These cuts are attributed to challenges related to the transportation of iron ore due to rail constraints in South Africa. If the restructuring efforts are successful, the number of job cuts might be reduced to approximately 141.

Frequent disruptions on the Transnet rail line, often stemming from locust infestations, have adversely impacted the mining company's iron ore exports. Consequently, Kumba Iron Ore has been compelled to accumulate higher iron ore inventories at its mines, resulting in a 17% decline in profits during the first six months of the year, up to June.
