Acciaierie d'Italia shuts down its blast furnace in Taranto for refurbishment

Italian steel producer Acciaierie d'Italia is in a process that affects its operations at its Taranto facility. The company has announced the temporary closure of the facility for the maintenance of its blast furnace No. 2. The shutdown will take place for one week, from December 4 to December 11.

However, unions have expressed doubts about a prompt restart, pointing to blast furnace No. 1, which has yet to restart after a previous maintenance period. This furnace, which was shut down in August to install filters on the sintering equipment, is still inactive.

Facility No. 1 in Taranto has also been inactive since the summer. With blast furnace No. 2 shut down, only blast furnace No. 4 is operating within the factory. This is an extremely low level of activity, equivalent to a daily production of 5,000 tons of pig iron.

The unions are concerned about the uncertainty of the reactivation of the facility at full capacity, as Acciaierie d'Italia's decision implies a temporary reduction in the company's production capacity.
