With nearly 30 years of experience in cement and concrete production, Çimko has published its 2023 Sustainability Report, which includes its environmental and social performance for the period January 1-December 31, 2023.
Within the framework of 6 main focuses (occupational health and safety, biodiversity, climate and environmental protection, sustainable cities and construction, sustainable cities and construction, stakeholder relations and supply chain) determined by taking into account the best practices in the world and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals; Çimko has determined an ambitious sustainability roadmap for 2026 in the short term, 2034 in the medium term and finally 2053, when Türkiye also targets 'net zero'.
Çimko CEO Dr. Önder Kırca said, “We are aware of our responsibilities for the future of our planet at the highest level. Supporting the fight against climate change and the transition to low carbon emissions for this purpose is at the center of our business strategy. We aim to create positive change by managing the impact of our products and activities on the planet. While reducing the carbon emissions of our own businesses, we also help our customers reduce their carbon footprint by developing new products and technologies. We focus on developing the right mindset and culture to achieve our goals, encouraging our employees to work together to find new solutions and building partnerships with those who share our goal.”
80 million TL investment in the environment in 2023
Emphasizing that Çimko has a strong foundation for a 'more sustainable environment' with innovative solutions and partnerships, Dr. Kırca announced that they made a total environmental investment of 80 million TL in 2023 and said, “With the mission of building a sustainable future, we aim to position ourselves as an ‘Advanced’ level sustainability player by supporting our existing good practices with new strategic initiatives.”
Savings achieved with alternative fuels
The use of alternative fuels containing biomass instead of fossil fuels in the cement industry constitutes one of the most important steps towards reducing the sector's carbon emissions. 80% of the environmental investment was used for alternative fuel, 9% for renewable energy and 11% for other environmental activities. Accordingly, significant fossil fuel savings were achieved by using 102,602 tons of additional fuel/alternative fuel in all Çimko facilities in 2023. While road maps are being prepared in the short and medium term to achieve the targets, studies are being carried out with local administrations to utilize the opportunities that arise.
55 million dollars investment in solar energy
Çimko has added 6 solar power plants (SPPs) with a total installed capacity of 49 MW on 750 decares of land in Ankara, Izmir and Manisa with an investment of approximately 55 million dollars in 2023 in order to supply the electricity needed by its production facilities from renewable sources. In addition to the existing investments, Çimko has received call letters for the installation of solar power plants with a total installed capacity of approximately 54 MW in Kahramanmaraş Pazarcık and İzmir Dikili. In addition, it aims to increase its current installed capacity of 49 MW to a total of 170 MW solar energy portfolio by applying for call letters for the installation of SPPs with an installed capacity of 65 MW.
Çimko develops long-term strategies focused on reducing water consumption, monitors consumption amounts and takes necessary measures to ensure savings and cost optimization. Throughout 2023, 27 percent of the water used in factories and ready-mixed concrete plants was recovered and reused. In ready-mixed concrete, the Company continues to develop projects to recycle 100% of the water obtained from sedimentation ponds and use it in high-strength concrete production by 2034.
Clinker utilization rate will be reduced
Continuing its R&D efforts to reduce the clinker usage rate in cement without slowing down, Çimko aims to use 75 percent clinker by 2030 and 70 percent by 2034. The company also continues to work to increase the share of environmentally friendly products in its portfolio.
Women engineers will be role models for young girls
Supporting the increase in female employment in the sector, Çimko focuses on positions where women are less frequently employed, especially in ready-mixed concrete, and improves physical conditions to make the sites suitable for female engineers. In 2023, Çimko plans to increase the ratio of female managers to 22 percent and the number of female employees by 15 percent. Çimko plans to create a female talent pool in high schools and universities and to influence the career decisions of university students, especially through female engineers working at Çimko.
