48.37 percent of the houses affected by the earthquake have earthquake insurance
Compulsory Earthquake Insurance has come to the agenda again after the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş.
According to the information compiled from DASK data, 55.4 percent of the 20 million 32 thousand houses in Turkey, that is, 11 million 96 thousand 931, have Compulsory Earthquake Insurance. In other words, 44.6 percent of the houses do not have earthquake insurance.
Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum said in a statement that 41 thousand 791 buildings in 10 provinces affected by the Kahramanmaraş-based earthquakes were determined to be ruined, to be demolished or severely damaged.
According to the information compiled from DASK data, there were a total of 2 million 175 thousand houses in these 10 provinces before the earthquake. While 48.37 percent (1 million 52 thousand 245) of these houses have earthquake insurance, it is seen that more than half of them are uninsured. The rate of uninsured houses is 51.63 percent (1 million 122 thousand 755).
It was seen that the highest insurance rate was in Gaziantep
Among these provinces, the highest insurance rate was seen in Gaziantep with 64.1 percent. 217 thousand 319 of the 339 thousand houses in the city were insured.
Gaziantep was followed by Kilis with 59.2 percent, Kahramanmaraş with 53.3 percent, Şanlıurfa with 52.4 percent and Malatya with 51.8 percent.
The insurance coverage rate was 46.1 percent in Adana, 44.4 percent in Adıyaman, 42.5 percent in Osmaniye, 39.8 percent in Hatay, one of the cities most affected by the earthquake, and 33.9 percent in Diyarbakır. It was noted that two out of every 3 houses in Diyarbakır were uninsured.
31.7 percent of insured houses were recorded as being built in 1999 and before.
Minister Murat Kurum said, "When you look at the houses built in this great disaster we are experiencing today, when you examine them, we see that 95 percent of the buildings destroyed were structures before 1999-2000."
According to DASK data, only 3.85 percent of the houses with earthquake insurance are buildings built in 1975 and before, and 27.82 percent are buildings dated 1976-1999. In other words, 31.67 percent of the insured houses belong to 1999 and before.
