10th Istanbul Carbon Summit took place with intense participation

Carbon management, green finance and Türkiye's decarbonization steps were discussed at the two-day summit.

10th Istanbul Carbon Summit took place with intense participation

The 10th Istanbul Carbon Summit, organized by the Sustainable Production and Consumption Association (SÜT-D) with the theme “Sustainable Solutions on the Path to Decarbonization and the Power of Green Finance”, was held on April 14-15, 2025 at Istanbul Technical University Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center.

Organized with the support of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and Istanbul Technical University (ITU), the event was attended by representatives from the business world, government agencies, local governments, academia and non-governmental organizations and students.

Speaking at the opening of the summit, ITU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal drew attention to the work carried out by the university on environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies. Prof. Dr. Filiz Karaosmanoğlu, President of SÜT-D, shared the latest data on the global temperature increase and stated “While 2015-2024 was the 10 hottest years on record, 2024 was completed 1.55 degrees above the average of the 1850-1900 period. When the uncertainty margin is added, this figure rises to 1.68 degrees.”

The session titled “Decarbonizing Economy and Green Money” was chaired by Dr. Kubilay Kavak, General Manager of ESCARUS (TSKB Sustainability Consultancy), while Seçil Yıldız, Deputy General Manager of TKYB, Bahadır Koçaker, Manager of TSKB Development Finance Institutions, Dr. Canan Özkan, Director of Green Economy and Climate Change at the Central Bank, and Elif Demet Meriç, Head of International Capital Markets Department at the Ministry of Treasury and Finance spoke.

In the next session, “Turkey's Decarbonization Path” was discussed. The session was chaired by Dr. S. Armağan Vurdu, Secretary General of Istanbul Mineral and Metals Exporters' Associations (IMMIB). Haluk Şahin Yazgı, Deputy Director General for Environmental Management at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Gülizar Yavaş, Head of EU Single Market and Green Deal Department at the Ministry of Trade, Büşra Sıla Gözlükaya, Head of Climate Group at the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Muhittin Aslan, Environmental Expert at the Climate Change Directorate of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, and Sevgi Kılıç Er, Expert, Sustainability Project Leader at the Public Oversight Accounting and Auditing Standards Authority.

The first session of the last day, titled “Carbon Management and Industry”, was chaired by Prof. Dr. Burcu ÖZSOY, President of TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center, with speeches by Sevda Atar, Petrol Ofisi POTEM R&D and Laboratories Manager, Dr. Erol Metin, Tayraş Board Advisor, Okay Kayhanlı, General Manager of QSI, and Savaş Tosun, General Manager of GT Carbon Fan.

In the last session titled “Carbon Management and Energy” chaired by Prof. Dr. Filiz Karaosmanoğlu, Istanbul Technical University Faculty Member and President of the Sustainable Production and Consumption Association, Yusuf Kartaş, Turkey Responsible for Carbon and Sustainability Solutions at ACT, Aşkın Kaan Kaptan, Eurasia Tunnel Operation and Maintenance Director, Tuğba Sarı, ATP GreenX Unit Head, Okan Yılmaz, Assistant Environmental Manager at İÇDAŞ and Atilla Yapar, General Manager of Kontek Energy took the floor.
