The company plans to start steel production as early as next month and is progressing this process in stages.
Wilfred Motsi, the plant's project manager, said: "We are very excited to be in the production process. The blast furnaces are running around the clock and everything is on schedule. After successfully completing the first phase, we will start actual carbon steel production in July. We are also building new housing for displaced families," he said.
Winston Chitando, Minister of Mines and Mining Development, said, "The steel mill is expected to contribute $5 billion to the economy. This started as part of the Vision 2030 with the goal of an upper-middle income group. This vision will be realized through agriculture, mining, manufacturing and other sectors. We are moving forward as a country, and this is a journey from which there is no turning back," he said.
Dinson Iron and Steel Company is a subsidiary of global steelmaking giant Tsingshan Holdings. The establishment of the plant has opened up many economic opportunities, including jobs in the Manhize region, and is expected to become one of the continent's largest steel producers.
With the planned phases, it was announced that the plant will have a steel production capacity of 600,000 tons of steel per year after the completion of the first phase and this will increase to 5 million tons when all phases are completed.
