US Department of Defence's USD 23 million boost to expand Constellium in Alabama

US Department of Defence's USD 23 million boost to expand Constellium in Alabama

The US Department of Defense has granted Constellium's facility in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, a substantial USD 23 million under the Defense Production Act. This investment is targeted at expanding the plant's aluminum casting capabilities. Specifically, the funds will be used to rebuild the Direct Chill aluminum casting center, which is crucial for increasing the production of low-carbon, high-quality aluminum products that are vital for both the defense and broader manufacturing sectors. Constellium Muscle Shoals is a significant player in the flat-rolled aluminum, serving the packaging and automotive sectors extensively.

This grant, managed through the Defense Production Act Investments Program, which falls under the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy, will help Constellium meet the growing demand for flat rolled aluminum products, which are critical in defense, aerospace, and automotive industries, among others.

The expanded capacity is expected to add up to 150,000 tons of annual casting capacity. This enhancement will enable Constellium to increase its use of recycled materials, decrease its reliance on primary metals, and bolster the domestic supply chain by providing a reliable source of aluminum rolling ingot for US industries.
