SSAB and Ponsse Plc, one of the world's largest manufacturers of cut-to-length forest machinery, have joined forces in a partnership in which SSAB will gradually supply Ponsse with fossil-free steel from 2026.
This partnership will further consolidate Ponsse's position as a sustainable forest machinery supplier and bring SSAB closer to its goal of creating a fossil-free value chain.
Lotta Ruottinen, Sales Director Europe at SSAB, said: "It is great to have a reliable partner like Ponsse joining our fossil-free journey. Joint efforts are needed to meet the challenging CO2 reduction targets in forest machinery. Both companies prioritise sustainable solutions and SSAB will strive to make a positive impact on forest machines using Fossil-free™ steel, fostering innovation while respecting nature."
Juha Inberg, R&D and Technology Director at Ponsse Plc, said: "Our products and services will play a pivotal role in helping our customers achieve their climate goals during the transition to a low carbon economy. Our PONSSE EV1 forwarder concept with all-electric drive and our partnership with SSAB on fossil-free steels will lead our development towards carbon neutral forestry."
SSAB plans to revolutionise the entire steelmaking process. SSAB aims to bring fossil-free steel to commercial scale in 2026 and to largely eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from our operations around 2030.
As part of the HYBRIT initiative, SSAB is working with iron ore producer LKAB and energy company Vattenfall to develop a value chain for fossil-free iron and steel production, using fossil-free electricity and hydrogen to replace the coking coal traditionally used in iron ore-based steel production. This process virtually eliminates carbon dioxide emissions in steel production.
