Germany to produce green steel with moroccan hydrogen plant

Germany to produce green steel with moroccan hydrogen plant

According to a statement by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), a new agreement has been signed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in environmental protection and energy transition. The agreement, signed by the German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze and Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Stefan Wenzel, focuses on the development of the green hydrogen sector, energy trade, national decarbonization efforts, environmental adaptation, and skilled workforce training.

It was shared that Germany is involved in the construction of Morocco's first green hydrogen production facility, which is expected to be completed in the coming years. The facility is anticipated to have an annual production capacity of approximately 10,000 metric tons, enabling steel producers to produce 50,000 metric tons of green steel annually. Additionally, while the facility aims to attract private investors to Morocco, the signed declaration is expected to pave the way for further investments.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action emphasized Morocco's advantages by stating, "Morocco has excellent conditions for generating electricity from wind and solar energy, allowing it to meet its own economic needs and potentially start exporting green hydrogen to Germany in the future." The ministry also mentioned that it had previously supported the construction of the world's largest solar energy facility in Ouarzazate, located in southern Morocco. This initiative had reduced annual carbon emissions by up to 800,000 metric tons.
