According to the State Customs Service, Ukraine's scrap industry has shown a significant growth in ferrous scrap exports for January-June 2024, increasing volumes by 35.3% compared to the same period in 2023 to 124.53 thousand tonnes.
Ukraine exported 22.16 thousand tonnes of scrap metal in June alone, up 48.2% from the previous month and 51.8% from June 2023. Export revenue for the six months rose 45.9% year-on-year to $39.76 million, with June revenue of $6.89 million, up 46% from May and up 62.8% year-on-year.
The average monthly export volume for the first half of the year was 20.75 thousand tonnes, significantly higher than last year's 15.34 thousand tonnes.
The main exports in the first half of the year were to Poland (108.37 thousand tonnes), Greece (11.69 thousand tonnes) and Germany (4.25 thousand tonnes).
Ukraine has no duty on scrap exports. Ukrainian scrap collection companies export about 15% of the collected scrap, steadily exceeding the volume of 20 thousand tonnes per month. This is despite the fact that one of the main scrap metal suppliers, Ukrainian Railway Operator, stopped selling scrap metal in September 2023, which had a negative impact on the market and the entire Ukrainian steel industry.
