The Machinery and Chemical Industry (MKE) Joint Stock Company, which has a deep-rooted history dating back to the 15th century Ottoman Empire, which is the leader of the Turkish defense industry, welcomed visitors intensively at Metal Expo 2024.
Cebrail Aydoğdu, Steel and Brass Factory Manager of the Machinery and Chemical Industry (MKE A.Ş.), who met with SteelRadar at the fair, made statements about the functioning of the Steel and Brass Factory. “Machinery and Chemical Industry Inc. is a well-established organization that meets the needs of all kinds in all types of weapons and ammunition used by our armed forces from the Ottoman Empire to the present day. Our Steel and Brass Factory is a factory established to meet the needs of qualified steel and brass raw materials required for the production of weapons and ammunition.”
Aydoğdu also stated that the factory produces barrels, daggers and other components for mortars, tanks, howitzers, and various ammunition and raw materials required for MK series aircraft bombs, and that the barrel and steel components of the National Tank Altay have also entered mass production. He also stated that the cartridge cases and liner thimbles used in cartridge production are also included in the factory's production capacity.
Aydoğdu said, “Our factory continues to meet the needs of the civilian market by producing forged qualified steel in different profiles from 80 mm to 1000 mm used in our country, primarily for the needs of the defense industry. Drawing attention to the difficulties in competition with countries such as Iran and China, especially in civilian market products, Aydoğdu stated that the incomes gained from civilian market sales support other factories within MKE A.Ş. to make the necessary investments in order to produce more advanced defense industry products that our country needs.”
By 2025 we will increase the capacity...
Informing that MKE Steel and Brass Factory is the first steel factory established in Turkey, Factory Manager Aydoğdu said that the company theoretically has the capacity to produce 90 thousand tons of qualified steel, but the actual capacity is currently around 35 thousand tons. By 2025, he explained that the target is to increase this capacity to 60 thousand tons in the first stage. He also stated that the forged steel production capacity is planned to be increased from 14 thousand tons to 40 thousand tons, and that 65-70 percent of the forged steel produced will be put on the market, while the rest will be sent to the arms industry.
Aydoğdu said that the company produces rice wedges in certain sizes other than qualified steel and that they produce 3 thousand tons per year. In 2025, he highlighted that these wedges will be rolled into bars and produced in the diameters and shapes demanded by the market. He also said that the aluminum ingot plant is about to start operations and that 8 thousand tons of aluminum ingots with 96% purity will be produced annually and put on the market.
Cebrail Aydoğdu announced that their biggest investment is a new free forging facility with a crushing force of 7,000 tons and the ability to forge 85 tons of ingots, which will start hot trials in January 2025. This facility will enable ingots of up to 85 tons to be forged to the desired reduction ratio and larger diameters much more easily. He said that in the Turkish market, steels with a diameter of 800 millimeters are currently produced, and with the new facility, steel production up to 1500 millimeters in diameter is targeted. He stated that products of this nature, which were being supplied from abroad, will now be produced directly.
Saying that the company aims to increase its current installed capacity and diversify its capabilities, Aydoğdu stated that their ultimate goal is to ensure that the qualified forged steels that our country needs and are supplied from abroad are produced in our country.
