ABB to provide innovative hybrid electric ferries for Washington State Ferries

Switzerland-based ABB has signed a comprehensive supply agreement with Washington State Ferries (WSF) for five new hybrid electric ferries. The agreement will utilize the systems integration expertise of ABB, a global leader in energy and automation technologies, from the project's shipyard bid phase through vessel commissioning and initial service.

ABB to provide innovative hybrid electric ferries for Washington State Ferries

In line with Washington State Ferries' goals, the new ferries will have a capacity of 1,500 passengers and 160 vehicles and will support WSF's goal of a zero-emission fleet by 2050. It was emphasized that with this project, an important step will be taken in the vision of sustainable maritime transportation in the USA. The hybrid electric propulsion systems to be provided by ABB will include advanced technologies such as Onboard DC Grid™ power distribution solution, energy storage, advanced energy management and integrated marine automation. These innovative systems aim to increase the operational efficiency of ships while reducing emissions.

ABB's propulsion systems will help Washington State Ferries modernize its fleet and reduce its environmental footprint. In this context, ABB will contribute to WSF's sustainability goals by providing comprehensive design and engineering support for the integration of hybrid electric technology.

WSF's Ferry System Electrification plan involves a total investment of USD 3.98 billion, with five new ferries to be delivered as the first step. ABB's technologies have the potential to significantly reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Matt von Ruden, WSF system electrification program manager, said ABB's expertise was critical to successfully complete the project and guarantee performance. Drew Orvieto, Vice President of Marine Systems Sales at ABB Marine & Ports USA, emphasized that this collaboration is a major step forward in terms of both sustainability and technological innovation.

ABB has been providing technology solutions that accelerate industrial transformation for more than 140 years and is a global leader in electrification and automation with more than 105,000 employees. The company's solutions aim to increase efficiency and sustainability in many processes from production to transportation.
